West Virginia families researching online school often want to see a day in the life of an online student before enrolling their middle schooler. At Virtual Preparatory Academy of West Virginia, students in grades 6 through 8 complete 5 hours and 30 minutes of instructional time daily within a school day that runs from about 8:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. This walkthrough shows how a typical day unfolds for a middle schooler at the school. The goal is to give families a realistic, hour-by-hour sense of what enrollment actually involves, rather than a general overview of the school's mission.
Morning Routine and Daily Planning
The school day begins around 8:00 a.m., giving middle schoolers a consistent daily routine similar to a traditional school schedule.
Students are strongly encouraged to attend daily live virtual classes to interact with teachers and collaborate with classmates from the start of the day. Families can review the daily schedule on the parent and student resources page. Establishing this routine early in the day helps set a productive tone that carries through the rest of the schedule.
Attending Virtual Classes
While live sessions are recorded for later review, attendance is required for specific activities such as orientation, testing, small group sessions, and advisory meetings.
Core Subjects
Middle schoolers engage with core subjects through live virtual classes where they interact directly with teachers and classmates, reinforcing content in real time.
Electives and Enrichment
High school students can pursue Career and Technical Education pathways in Health and Science, Information Technology, or Business, building toward the state's 24-credit graduation requirement. Families can browse programs on the academics page.
Independent Coursework and Assignments
Outside of live sessions, students work through interactive coursework on the Canvas platform, completing all assignments and activities, including those introduced during any live session they may have missed.
This independent block gives middle schoolers structured practice time to reinforce material and stay current with their coursework.
Because this portion of the day is self-directed, it also gives students a chance to revisit material at their own pace before moving on, reinforcing concepts introduced earlier in the day rather than rushing ahead.
Breaks and Physical Activity
With a school day extending close to 5 hours and 30 minutes of required instructional time, students benefit from short breaks between live sessions and independent coursework.
These pauses help middle schoolers maintain focus through the full length of the school day.
Learning coaches at home can help reinforce this rhythm by encouraging students to step outside, hydrate, or move around before returning to the next portion of the day.
Communication With Teachers
Students must regularly communicate with their teachers through Canvas to remain engaged and ensure they are making steady progress, keeping communication a consistent part of the daily routine.
Because the Student Success Team can adjust individual schedules, students who need more or less live instruction have a clear path to request that support.
This kind of steady communication matters most in middle school, when students are building the independence they will rely on in high school while still benefiting from close teacher support.
Socialization and Extracurricular Opportunities
Live class sessions, small group meetings, and advisory time all give middle schoolers regular chances to interact with teachers and peers throughout the week. Families interested in enrollment can visit the admissions page.
These moments of connection matter for middle schoolers, who are developing social skills alongside academic ones during this stage of their education.
Building Time Management Skills
Balancing required live sessions with independent Canvas coursework teaches middle schoolers how to plan their day around fixed commitments while managing the rest of their time.
Because schedules can be tailored by the Student Success Team, students also learn to advocate for the structure that helps them succeed.
At the middle school level, learning coaches typically provide moderate support, averaging one to three hours per day to help create a daily plan and confirm that assignments are being completed.
